Printed Markings
Ducati applies its legends to the moulded surface and they are the first thing to go. On an R, whose owner adjusts settings constantly, that is more than a cosmetic problem.
Heat and Then None
The bar area warms considerably and cools completely, hundreds of times a year. Plastics take a set under that cycling; machined aluminium does not.
Clip Tension Over Seasons
Two moulded halves under the vibration of an engine revving to 16.500. The snap fittings lose their grip and the play that develops never comes back out again.
A Layer, Not a Coating
Anodising is grown into the aluminium electrolytically. Against carbon panels and exposed titanium fastenings, it reads as another finished surface rather than as paint.
Nothing Cut
The original block returns in twenty minutes whenever it is wanted. On a homologation special destined for a collector, an untouched harness is worth real money.
Four Anodised Options
Black, red, titanium and copper. On an R carrying carbon and titanium everywhere, the titanium finish is the one that disappears into the specification entirely.
Nine Hundred and Ninety-Eight Cubic Centimetres
Ducati shortened the Stradale's stroke to fall under the World Superbike capacity limit. Everything else about the R follows from making that engine survive up there.
A Dry Clutch, Again
Ducati had removed dry clutches from its range years earlier and put one back on the R. It handles repeated racing starts better and it makes the noise people associate with the marque.
Sixteen Thousand Five Hundred Revs
Grand prix territory from a road-registered motorcycle. The titanium connecting rods exist because nothing conventional would last at that ceiling.
