A Parallel Twin From Rotax
BMW's 798 cc twin was built in Austria with a counterbalance shaft and a 360 degree crank, which gives it a firing pattern closer to a boxer than to a Japanese twin.
What Can Go Wrong
A map leaned out where the engine is working hard. That is the one genuinely dangerous mistake available here, and it is why a wideband sensor is not optional equipment.
Diagnostics Stay Honest
The standard controller keeps its own fault memory and its own adaptations. A workshop reads the motorcycle rather than reading somebody's tuning session.
Mapping at a Circuit
A laptop, a wideband and a session between runs. This is where a programmable unit earns its price over a preset module, because conditions change and the map can follow.
Plan the USB Access
Nothing is more irritating than removing a seat unit every time the map changes. Route the connection somewhere reachable before securing the harness.
Or Book a Dyno
Several hours with somebody who has mapped that engine before produces a better result than most owners reach alone, and the unit is the same either way.
Backups Off the Laptop
Copy the good maps somewhere else. Laptops in paddocks get dropped, rained on and left behind, and a map is easier to lose than to recreate.
Three Cylinders
Triples sit between the two and tend to show mixture problems as a change in character rather than as a stumble. They reward careful low-load work.
