Two Hundred and Forty Kilograms
Wet, which is substantial and carried remarkably low. The V4 disguises its mass better than the twin it replaced ever did.
What Leaves the Engine
The housing, its reeds, the hose to the airbox and the clips holding it. The top of the motor ends up visibly less cluttered.
Twenty Minutes Once Exposed
The work itself is short. Everything else in the job is getting the tank and airbox out of the way first.
Do the Airbox End Too
An open port in the intake is a worse outcome than the system ever was, so both ends need closing in the same session.
Keep the Original
It goes back in twenty minutes with no new seals required, and having it is what turns an emissions inspection into a straightforward evening.
Access on a V4
Ducati packages four cylinders into a very compact space, and the rear bank is genuinely awkward. Anybody doing this should have the airbox out and the bodywork somewhere safe before starting.
Why Aluminium Instead
There is nothing inside a machined cover to age, nothing to inspect and nothing to replace for the life of the engine. It seals on an O-ring in a turned groove against the head's own finished face, which means it can come off and go back on repeatedly without damaging anything underneath it.
What the Ports Look Like Underneath
Two small drillings into the exhaust side of the head, machined flat around their edges so a seal can work. There is nothing delicate about them and nothing that needs protecting, but they should be wiped clean before the cover goes on, because a piece of grit under an O-ring is the one way this job leaks.
