Two Hundred and Thirty-Five Kilograms

The SE Specification
Öhlins rear suspension and Brembo brakes on the higher version, which turns a competent tourer into a genuinely fast one.
Nothing Cut
Original bracket holes and connectors throughout, so the conversion reverses in an evening with no replacement parts required.
Not a Performance Change
Removing evaporative control does not free power, sharpen the throttle or improve consumption. The gains are space, access and one fewer thing to fail.
Nothing Structural
The bracket carries the vessel and nothing else. No part of the frame, the subframe or the fuel supply is affected and the only trace left is a pair of empty holes.
Fitted With an Exhaust
Both jobs happen in the same congested area, so doing them together means the bodywork comes off once rather than twice.
The Purge Valve's Failure Mode
When the bed is saturated it delivers liquid fuel rather than vapour into the inlet tract, which is precisely why a flooded canister produces a rich idle.
Photograph the Hoses First
The routing is hard to see once anything is disturbed and impossible to reconstruct from memory a year later. Two minutes with a camera makes the eventual refit straightforward.
On a Bike That Tours
Filling to the brim at every stop is exactly what a rider crossing empty country does, and exactly what ruins a charcoal bed. The models with the largest tanks therefore suffer most, which is the opposite of convenient.
A Category of Its Own
Nothing else combines a superbike four, hard luggage and this riding position. Kawasaki has owned the niche for well over a decade and shows no sign at all of leaving it.
