A Motorcycle Built to Be Changed
BMW designed the R nineT around a modular subframe so owners could rebuild it. More of these are modified than left standard, which is unusual and entirely deliberate.
Everything Is Visible
On a bike with no bodywork and a deliberately exposed boxer, a plastic canister and three hoses are exactly what a builder removes first.
What the Carbon Does
Holds petrol vapour from the tank until a valve draws it into the intake. It is regulatory hardware and it contributes nothing to how the engine runs.
Air and Oil Cooled
The last of BMW's boxers without a radiator, which is most of why the R nineT was built and most of why owners keep them.
Soaked at the Pump
Filling past the nozzle click forces liquid fuel into the bed. Hard starting and a rough idle follow, and the cause is almost never suspected.
Not Simply an Open Pipe
Cutting the vapour line short and leaving it is the usual improvisation. It works until the motorcycle lies on its side and then it very much does not.
No Dealer Visit Afterwards
The circuit passes its own test from the first start, so nothing needs clearing and no appointment is required.
Boxer Character
The 1170 cc twin has been in production in some form for decades and it still turns the whole motorcycle sideways on a blip. It is the reason people buy these.
Two Ways
The kit is designed to come off as readily as it goes on, which is not true of most improvised solutions.
Not a Grey Area
Either the market requires the system or it does not. Where it does, removing it is unambiguous and the rider should know that going in.
Not Just the Canister
The bracket and the valve go too. Leaving either behind means an empty mount and a live circuit for no benefit.
