The shape of this muffler is thirty years old. Akrapovic first used it in the mid-nineties, and for the XSR900 they brought it back — same silhouette, modern materials, modern manufacturing. It is the rare case where a retro design on a retro bike is not a costume: the company is quoting itself, not somebody else.

Why the Side Exit Matters Here
The standard XSR900 routes its silencer underneath, which is tidy and invisible. Moving it to the right-hand side is the single change that makes the bike read as a period racer rather than a modern naked with retro paint. On the GP version, with its half fairing, the effect is stronger still.
Both surfaces that are on show — pre-muffler and muffler — are sandblasted rather than polished. On titanium that gives an even matt grey that ages consistently instead of discolouring in patches around the clamp.
One Restriction Worth Knowing
This system is not compatible with the original Yamaha saddlebags. If the bike is used with them, this is not the exhaust for it. Stated here rather than discovered on the workbench.
The GP Is a Different Motorcycle Above the Frame
Yamaha added the XSR900 GP in 2024: a half fairing in period racing colours, clip-on bars below the yoke, a solo seat unit and a shorter, harder riding position. Below that bodywork it is an XSR900 — same CP3 triple, same frame, same exhaust routing — which is why this system carries both in its fitment.
The one thing to plan for is access. On the GP the lower fairing has to be removed before the headers can be reached, and Akrapovic's quoted 90 minutes assumes that work. On a standard XSR900 the same job is more open and goes faster.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-Y9R16-HDT/2 covers the Yamaha XSR900 and the XSR900 GP from model year 2022 through 2026. Installation takes around 90 minutes because the headers are part of the system, and a noise insert is supplied.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval to Euro 5, certificates supplied and downloadable here. The catalytic converter is incorporated into the layout, so nothing is removed from the emissions path and the machine stays legal.
