Whoever chose the filter that came in this motorcycle had to choose one, for every ZT 350-GK sold, in every market it went to. Swept city roads and dry gravel lanes, coastal damp and construction dust, all served by a single specification. That is not a criticism of the choice; it is a description of the job. An owner is under no such constraint, and that is the entire reason a second medium exists for this airbox.

One element for every road

A production filter is specified around an average of conditions and a set of costs, and it has to be acceptable everywhere rather than well matched anywhere. A rider knows something that specification could not: which roads this particular machine actually spends its year on. Where those roads are dusty, narrowing the specification is a sensible use of the knowledge. Where they are not, it is not, and the P08 in the same housing — 80 microns, 5,050 litres per square metre per second, the same dry washable construction — is the better-matched answer.

What you are and are not deciding

You are deciding where to sit on a line that runs from retention at one end to airflow at the other. You are not making the motorcycle stronger: a drop-in element does not add power to a standard ZT 350-GK, and the finer medium hands back flow headroom rather than releasing any. Nor is it an irreversible decision. Nothing in the airbox is altered to accept this element, so the choice can be revisited at the next service, in whichever direction the following year's riding suggests.

Care and cleaning

Use compressed air on the clean face, directed outward through the material. A greasy element wants lukewarm water and a mild detergent instead, then a rinse until the water comes off clear. Either way it dries in moving air at room temperature — heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy it — and the SM277P14 returns to the airbox dry and untouched.
