The CB500X is bought to be ridden a long way from home on a modest budget, which is a specific kind of use with a specific weakness: everything on it has to be serviceable where it stands. Tools can be carried, a tube can be carried, but consumables are heavy, awkward and easy to get wrong — and an air filter is the consumable that most often turns out to be needed at the end of a dry stage rather than the start of one. The Sprint Filter P14 CM220P14 removes that item from the packing list. It is a dry non-woven element, filtering to 14 microns, that is cleaned rather than replaced.
Key Features
- Never oiled: nothing to pack, nothing to re-apply once it is clean
- Air flow 1,800 l/m²/sec at a filtration of 14 microns
- Around double the area of medium that other performance elements carry
- The standard element comes out and this goes in — no modification, no remap
- Compressed air does the servicing, and a compressor exists in every tyre shop in every country
- Built to last the life of the motorcycle, warranted for two years
Maintenance that does not depend on a parts counter
Away from home, a paper element is a dependency with a delivery time attached. A washable one is a twenty-minute job wherever there is a compressor, and if there is no compressor there is water and mild detergent, which there always is. This is the practical reason travellers move to a dry medium and it has nothing to do with performance: the CM220P14 turns a supply problem into a maintenance habit, and a maintenance habit travels. A 471 cc twin with a standard exhaust and standard mapping does not gain power from a new element, whatever the airbox contains. What it gains is an intake restriction that does not creep upwards over a long trip, and one fewer box in the panniers.
Choosing the medium for the ground, not the bike
Sprint Filter builds the same element in several fabrics because the right one depends on where the bike is going rather than what it is. The P08 is the road and track medium at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec. The P14 trades flow for retention at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec, which is the sensible balance for long dry stages and unsealed surfaces. For genuinely extreme ground — desert crossings, deep dust days on end — Sprint Filter offers the T12 at 7 microns, and it gives up more flow again. None of these is a rank order. They are three answers to the question of what the air is carrying, and the CB500X is a bike that meets more than one of them in a single trip.
Care and cleaning
On the road, lukewarm water with a mild detergent is as good as anything: rinse until the water runs clear and let the CM220P14 dry in open air, never with heat and never near a flame. Where there is a compressor, air from the clean side is quicker. Either way it goes back dry and unoiled. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda CB500X from 2019 to 2026. The same CM220P14 element covers six machines across Honda's 400 and 500 twin range; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
