Three elements fit the Tuono's airbox, and they do not line up the way a price list invites you to assume. This is the dearest of them by a distance — a little over twice the standard P08, and roughly three times the dusty-conditions P14 — while also being the one with the narrowest set of conditions in which it makes any sense. PM176S F1-85 is a racing medium: 85 µm passing a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec, drawn up for engines kept near the top of their range for whole sessions at a time.
Key Features
- The racing weave of the dry polyester family — no oil when new, none after any wash
- 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec, the most open and fastest-flowing medium Sprint Filter lists
- 95.22 % of 100-micron particles held under measurement; traditional oiled cotton reached 76.42 %
- Roughly twice the working cloth of a typical performance element, in the standard panel frame
- Goes into the series airbox in place of the paper element — nothing cut, nothing moved, no remap
- Serviced with an air line rather than replaced, with two years of warranty from purchase
Price order is not quality order
Read down a catalogue and the assumption builds itself: the expensive one must be the good one. In a filter range that assumption falls over, because the media are not versions of each other. The P14 costs the least of the three here and is the finest of them. This one costs the most and is the coarsest. Each price reflects what a material is and what making it involves, not a rank on one scale of goodness. Ask instead which conditions the Tuono actually meets — sealed roads, dusty ones, or a circuit — and the ordering rearranges itself completely.
The conditions this one is for
Sustained full throttle, sessions rather than journeys, and an intake that gets opened often. A machine used that way is well served by an element cleared in minutes and put straight back, and that use is the only one in which the extra flow is drawn upon at all. On a naked bike ridden between towns it is an expensive way to buy very little. In every case the same limit holds: fitting a filter to an untouched airbox does not raise the output of a series motorcycle, whichever of the three you end up choosing.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning is where an expensive element gives some of itself back, since the operation is trivial. Hold an air line at the clean face of PM176S F1-85 and blow the dirt out the way it came in, keeping the nozzle on the move. If air alone leaves the cloth marked, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid finish the job; rinse until nothing more washes out. Drying is done in circulating room air and by no other means, since heat — a gun, a radiator, an open flame — is the one thing polyester will not survive. The element goes back dry, with no oil or spray of any kind. See Downloads for the maintenance sheet.
