The place where an air filter becomes a problem is rarely the garage. A V-Strom 1050 is bought to be ridden a long way from the people who normally service it, and on a trip like that everything carried is a decision: a tyre repair kit, a set of levers, perhaps a spare filter and the tools to fit it. The Sprint Filter P08 PM253S takes one of those decisions away. It is a dry, washable polyester element for the standard airbox, and its service is an air line — something that exists at any tyre shop, most petrol stations and a good many campsites. Nothing to carry, nothing to order, nothing to throw away at the roadside. It is not a power part; a filter in a standard airbox never is.

Service you can do with what is already there

Seat off, airbox open, blow the element through from the inside outwards, look at it, put it back. It is a job measured in minutes and it needs nothing you would otherwise have packed. After a dusty stage you can do it the same evening rather than hoping the next scheduled service catches what that day did. Over a long trip the element stops being a spare you either brought or did not, and becomes something you simply look after as you go — which is a better fit for how far this bike takes people from a parts counter.

Why oil is the wrong answer away from a workbench

An oiled cotton gauze filter has its own procedure: a dedicated cleaner, fresh oil, and hours of drying before it can go back in. None of that belongs in a tank bag, and the oil itself sits as a film directly upstream of the throttle bodies and the air-flow sensor. The P08 is dry — single-layer woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards. Sprint Filter measured 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles for the dry P08 against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton. Finer media exist for harder air, and each one trades flow for retention: P037 at 37 microns, P14 at 14, T12 at 7 and only 560 litres per square metre per second where the P08 passes 5,050.

Care and cleaning

Normal service is an air line, held to the clean side and blown outwards. When the PM253S wants more, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. It dries completely in open air — never with heat, never with a flame — and is refitted dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Suzuki V-Strom 1050, 2020 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. Four machines take this element: the V-Strom 1050 and the V-Strom 1050XT of the current generation, and the earlier V-Strom 1000 and 1000XT built up to 2019. The full list is in the Fitment tab.
