Sprint Filter P08 Air Filter for Road & Track – BMW F 900 XR (2019–2026) PM188S

The XR is the one bike in the F family built to hold a speed rather than reach it. Long autobahn stages are the least dramatic thing a motorcycle does and the most demanding thing you can ask of an air filter, because the airflow never lets up — there is no coasting, no traffic, no minute at idle to recover. The engine draws a high, constant volume for hours, and the filter carries that load the entire time. The Sprint Filter P08 PM188S is a dry polyester element with roughly double the filtering surface, sized so that sustained flow is not the condition where the intake starts to run out of room.

Why sustained speed is the hard case

Most intake restriction is discussed as a peak-power figure, measured for a few seconds on a dyno. A touring rider never experiences that. What they experience is two hours at a constant high load, where the pressure drop across the filter is not a momentary cost but a continuous one, and where the airbox is running warm enough that any oil in the system has every opportunity to travel. Both arguments point the same way: more filtering surface to lower the continuous restriction, and a dry medium so there is nothing in the intake that heat can mobilise.

What it does not do

It is worth saying plainly. This will not add meaningful peak power to a standard F 900 XR, and any product that promises otherwise from a drop-in filter is overselling. What it does is keep the intake where BMW designed it to be for far longer than a paper element will, and remove the maintenance item that most often gets deferred on a high-mileage tourer. On a bike that covers serious distance, holding the baseline is the whole point.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side outwards is the routine service. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry. There is no oiling step.
