The interesting word in the description of this element is not polyester. It is dry. A Sprint Filter P08 arrives without oil, is cleaned without oil and is refitted without oil, and that one fact removes the part of filter maintenance people most often get wrong. Oiled gauze has to be re-treated after every wash, in the right quantity, and an over-oiled element sends its surplus downstream. PM108S has no such step, which on a Shiver 900 serviced at home is worth more than any figure on the packaging.
Key Features
- Woven polyester run dry throughout — no oil at any point in the element's life
- 80 µm at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, the road and track member of the Sprint Filter range
- Fibres from ø 22 microns; that number describes the thread, not the gap between threads
- Roughly twice the working surface of a typical performance element, in the original frame
- Sits where the paper panel sat in the standard airbox, with no modification and no remap
- Serviced and reused instead of replaced, two years of warranty from the date of purchase
A maintenance step that cannot be got wrong
Every extra operation in a service is somewhere for a mistake to live. Re-oiling is one of those operations: too little and the medium is not doing what its design assumes, too much and the excess travels where it should not. Taking that step out of the sequence leaves compressed air, occasionally water and detergent, and a wait while the cloth dries. There is no dosage to judge, no second product to buy alongside the filter and nothing to assess by eye, which is why the instruction never to oil this element reads less as a warning than as a description of how it works.
The last two years of a long run
The Shiver 900 closes a line that began in 2007, and one element covers both ends of it. That is useful to the owner of a final-year bike: the intake consumable is not tied to a two-year production window, and it is shared with the earlier machines in the family. What it does not bring is more power, because a filter dropped into an untouched airbox does not make a series motorcycle noticeably stronger. The honest gain is an intake resistance that is lower and that holds steady between services.
Care and cleaning
The routine for PM108S is short. Compressed air, directed at the clean face and worked across the surface, pushes the trapped material out the way it entered. If a season has left more behind than air can lift, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent will take it, and the cloth should be rinsed until the water runs through clear. Drying is done in open room air and nowhere warmer, because heat ruins polyester — no gun, no radiator, no flame — and the element is refitted dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
