What the covers protect
Underneath the cover sits the pivot point that lets the boot flex at the ankle. Mud, sand and stones working their way into that point increase wear and can make the movement stiff. The cover seals the area visually and mechanically and takes small knocks that would otherwise hit the hinge directly.
