A Supplier With a Grand Prix History
Magneti Marelli supplied the control electronics used across MotoGP for years. Its racing equipment carries a pedigree that very few other manufacturers can claim.
Inputs to the Marelli System
The block reports there rather than to Ducati's own electronics. Button behaviour is written in the configuration and changed with a laptop rather than a soldering iron.
A Complete Replacement
An R running Marelli hardware has had its road electronics comprehensively removed. This component belongs to the new system and is inert without it.
What a Team Actually Gains
Channels of its own choosing at rates of its own choosing, and strategies that change between circuits. None of that is possible with a factory dashboard however good it is.
Military-Specification Contacts
Sealed inside the machined body. Twenty minutes after a session a hot jet arrives, and that is what finishes switchgear rather than the laps completed.
Black Anodised
Grown into the aluminium. Against the R's carbon panels and titanium fasteners it disappears, and it survives everything a paddock does to it.
Built Around a Rulebook
The R's capacity, its internals and its aerodynamics are all answers to World Superbike regulations. Nothing about it was chosen to look good in a showroom.
Titanium Connecting Rods
A consequence of a rev ceiling rather than a specification flourish. Nothing conventional lasts a season at those speeds and Ducati has never pretended otherwise.
Cut From Solid
Machined so that repeated removal through a racing season changes nothing about the fit. Moulded blocks with clips stop sitting square long before that.
A Dry Clutch, Deliberately
Ducati had removed dry clutches from its entire range and then put one back on the R, because it handles repeated racing starts better than a wet one does. It also makes the noise the marque is remembered for, which nobody at Bologna was going to object to.
