The list of jobs an owner can still do on a current motorcycle gets shorter with every generation. Ride modes, traction control and the engine management on this Hayabusa all sit behind software, the braking system has electronics of its own, and most of the service schedule is written for a workshop with a laptop. What remains in the owner's hands is a short list, and the air filter is on it. Fitting a Sprint Filter P08 PM208S keeps it there for good: instead of a part bought and thrown away on a schedule, the airbox holds an element that is taken out, cleaned and put back for as long as the motorcycle is owned.

The short list, and keeping something on it

There is a practical difference between a part you replace and a part you look after. A replacement is an errand: the box gets opened when the new item is to hand, and until then nothing useful can be done. Maintenance is a habit, and habits last because repeating them costs nothing. On a machine where so much else has moved out of reach, keeping one component inside that routine is worth more than the panel price suggests.

What it is honestly for

Not power. Nothing you drop into an unmodified airbox makes a series Hayabusa noticeably stronger, and the calibration was signed off with a filter already fitted. The gain is a restriction that is lower and — the half that matters — more constant from one service to the next. Twice the cloth spreads a given quantity of dust across more of itself, and an air line resets the element to the figure it began at. In Sprint Filter's own comparison, the dry P08 keeps 93.13 per cent of test particles at 100 microns where four-layer oiled cotton manages 76.42. For harder air there are tighter media, each trading flow away to get there: 37 microns at 4,500 litres, 14 microns at 1,800, 7 microns at 560. Different jobs, not better ones.

Care and cleaning

Everyday servicing of the PM208S needs nothing more than an air line, worked from the clean side so the dust travels back out of the weave rather than deeper into it. Should that stop being enough, a bath in lukewarm water with a mild detergent will clear it — keep rinsing while the water still colours. Then let it dry through completely in air alone, with no heat gun and no flame near it, and put it back untreated. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
