DescriptionThe whole story▼
The JP ES 033 closes the PAIR ports on the XJ6's cylinder head.
Key Features
- Yamaha XJ6 (2009–2015)
- Machined block-off cover for the PAIR ports
- Sealed with its own gasket
- Fully reversible to standard
A Detuned FZ6
Yamaha took the 600 four and softened it considerably for the XJ6, aiming at riders who wanted a middleweight that did not have to be revved. It sold well and quietly.
Seventy-Eight Horsepower
From 600 cc, with the torque moved down the range. It is a long way from the supersport version of the same engine and it is far easier to live with.
Two Galleries
Fresh air travels from a reed valve into the exhaust ports. This plate closes them at the head, which is where the flow actually has to be stopped.
Sealed With a Gasket
Supplied rather than optional. Beside an exhaust port, silicone applied by hand hardens within weeks and stops sealing entirely.
Where the Popping Comes From
Not the exhaust but the emissions system. Fresh air meeting unburnt fuel in a hot header produces the noise and closing the passages ends it.
Flat Under Heat
Machined aluminium keeps its sealing face through thermal cycling. Pressed covers move and then leak at the joint.
Type Approval
Emissions equipment is part of the motorcycle's registration. Removing it is a closed-circuit modification wherever the rules are enforced.
Cheap and Underrated
The XJ6 has always been inexpensive second-hand and it has always been reliable. It is a sensible base for anybody wanting a project without a large outlay.
Reversible
The factory cover goes back with its own gasket at any point. Nothing about the head is altered.
Sold Quietly for Six Years
The XJ6 never appeared in a magazine comparison test and Yamaha sold a great many of them to riders who wanted a middleweight that simply worked. They are cheap now, they are reliable, and they make a sensible base for a project.
