DescriptionThe whole story▼
The JP ES 003 caps the ER-6 F's KLEEN ports in the cylinder head with a machined blank.

The Faired ER-6
Six hundred and forty-nine cubic centimetres and seventy-two horsepower behind a half fairing. It was the sensible middleweight before the Ninja 650 took the name.
A Perimeter Trellis Frame
Steel tubing running over the engine, with an offset rear shock. It is an unusual arrangement and it kept the ER-6 narrow and light.
The Reed Assembly
A moulded housing holding one reed per port, bolted to the cylinder head cover and fed by a hose from the airbox. It is the half that physically admits the air.
Homologation
The system is part of the motorcycle's approval where it is fitted, and removing it moves the machine into competition use in those markets.
Fewer Perishables
Very little bolted to a cylinder head is designed to be replaced. This box is, and swapping it for solid metal takes a future bill off the list rather than only an emissions part.
The Complete Mechanical Picture
Follow it from the intake: a spigot on the airbox, a pipe, a valve box, then two drillings in the head. The cover shuts the far end for good, and whoever does that has to shut the near end too, because an open spigot feeding an engine unfiltered air is a considerably worse outcome than anything the system was doing.
Nothing Hidden
The cover is visible to anybody who looks at the engine, which is the correct way for a change of this kind to work.
Where the Soot Shows
Inside the airbox and on the filter, downstream of a cracked reed. It is the cheapest diagnosis available anywhere on the system.
An Offset Rear Shock
Mounted to the side of the wheel rather than centrally, which is unusual and allowed Kawasaki to keep the ER-6 short. It is one of several details that made the model handle better than its price suggested.
Before the Ninja Name
Kawasaki sold the faired 650 as the ER-6f for years before renaming it, and the earlier bikes are now cheap enough to be modified without agonising. That is the population this kind of part reaches.
