There is a list every rider runs through before taking a machine out after it has stood a while: tyres, brakes, lights, chain, fluids, battery. The air filter is almost never on it. Not because it does not matter, but because checking it has always meant committing to buying one — you open the box, you see something grey, and now you either fit it back or order a part. On a Monkey 125, which spends more of its life parked than most motorcycles, that is exactly the wrong incentive.

Putting the filter on the list

A washable element changes the economics of looking. Opening the box costs ten minutes and nothing else: if the element is clean, it goes straight back; if it is not, an air line puts it right and it still goes back. Nobody has to decide whether the state of it justifies a purchase. That sounds like a small thing, and it is — right up to the point where a machine that has stood through a damp winter gets ridden again, and the one item nobody inspected turns out to be the one that changed.

What it will not do

It will not make a standard Monkey 125 quicker. A drop-in filter never does that on a standard road machine, and on a 125 the ceiling is set by the licence class long before anything in the intake tract gets a say. The PM179S offers something duller and more real: an intake restriction that starts lower and, because you can restore it whenever you like, stays lower. A paper panel is at its best on the day it goes in and at its worst on the day it comes out, and nothing in between announces itself.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, so what the weave stopped leaves the way it arrived. If something will not come out dry, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent will lift it — rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry in moving air at its own pace.
