A Hypermotard is ridden in bursts. Hard on the throttle, hard on the brakes, wide bars, and almost nothing held at a steady state — which makes it about the most transient-heavy duty cycle a road bike has. That matters for the air filter more than any peak figure does, because the pressure drop across an element rises with flow rather than staying constant. Every one of those bursts is the engine asking for a step change in airflow, and a partly loaded filter costs most at exactly that instant. The Sprint Filter P08 CM61S is a dry polyester element with roughly double the filtering surface.

Snap is the thing you would miss

The 821 Testastretta 11° is not the most powerful engine Ducati has built, and nobody bought a Hypermotard for a top-speed figure. What they bought was the immediacy — the way the bike answers the moment the throttle opens. The engine management meters fuel to the air that actually arrives, so a restricted intake does not produce a fault; it produces a softer edge. Nothing feels broken, the bike is simply less sharp, and because it happens gradually the rider adjusts without noticing.

Urban duty is dirtier than it looks

Stop-start city riding loads a filter steadily with the fine particulate that traffic produces, and unlike a track day it never announces itself. A washable element can be returned to its starting restriction; a paper one cannot, and simply gets a little worse until it is replaced.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry; there is no oiling step.
