DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08418-55 is a pair of fork springs rated at 5.5 N/mm, 450 mm long with a 38.5 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

  • Free length 450 mm
  • Inner diameter 38.5 mm
  • Measured spring rate 5.5 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 08418-55
  • 266 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Supplied as a pair

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Dimensions

The 38.5 mm bore and 450 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 5.5 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
