CFMOTO has adjusted details of the MT 800 more than once since 2022, and Sprint Filter still lists one element for every year of it. That is more useful than it first sounds. Model-year revisions normally leave an owner working out which piece of advice still applies to their own machine; the airbox is one of the few places where a 2022 bike and a 2026 bike are demonstrably the same, because an element is drawn around a housing, and this housing has not moved.

Five model years on one code

A part number that spans a whole production run is quietly informative. It says the intake tract was settled before the first bike left the factory and left alone afterwards, which is not true of every component on this motorcycle. The practical consequence is narrow but real: when a rider whose machine is three years older than yours describes how the box comes apart, how the seal beds down, or how much fell out of the pleats after a dry summer, that account transfers to you without a caveat. Very little else in a maintenance conversation does.

Which is not the same as more power

Nothing that drops into a standard airbox makes a standard MT 800 noticeably quicker, and a listing that hints at it is describing a hope. What changes is the shape of the interval. A paper panel begins at its best and travels in one direction until somebody bins it; a washable element has a reference condition it can be returned to, so intake restriction stays close to where it started instead of drifting upward with nothing to announce it. Across five model years of ownership that is the entire argument, and it is a modest one.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, sends the load back out the way it arrived, and for most services that is the whole job. Insect residue and road film want lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Drying is slow and cold — moving air only, never a heat gun, a radiator or a flame — and the PM228S goes back in dry, with nothing sprayed onto it afterwards.
