DescriptionThe whole story▼
By the last practice session of the day, a busy motocross track looks nothing like it did in the morning. Every corner has grown ruts, braking bumps have formed on the approaches, and a rider on a Yamaha YZ85 has to brake into grooves that were not there a few hours earlier. For the young racers who ride the 85s, learning to handle that is part of growing up on a bike. The B8262, Accossato's folding front brake lever for the YZ85 of 2002 to 2022, is cut on CNC machines in Italy from solid Ergal 7075.
Key Features
- Folding front brake lever for the Yamaha YZ85, model years 2002 to 2022
- Takes the place of the stock lever on the original master cylinder
- Short blade designed for three fingers
- Blade can fold forward on the anti-break joint in a fall
- Cut from solid Ergal 7075 on CNC machines in Italy
- Four blade colours: black, blue, gold or green
- No German ABE on file; for motocross and off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato's recipe for the B8262 has two ingredients: Ergal 7075, one of the high-strength aluminium alloys, and CNC machining from solid material in Italy. Strength, low weight and reliability are the qualities the company is after. The lever comes in two parts, a base with a dark finish that sits on the pivot of the front master cylinder and a blade in black, blue, gold or green, connected by the joint that allows the blade to fold. On the brake side the blade is short, laid out for three fingers.
When the Ruts Get Deep
Braking into a rutted corner is a different job from braking on a smooth surface. The approach is usually rough, so the rider stands, keeps the weight centred and brakes firmly while the bike is still straight, then eases off the front just before the wheel drops into the rut. Braking inside the rut is where trouble starts, because a front wheel that is slowing hard tends to climb the wall and push the bike out. Coaches tell 85cc riders to pick the rut early, look at the exit rather than the front wheel, and trust the rut to hold the bike once they are in it.
Young riders learn it the usual way, with a few falls. The YZ85 lies down in the rut, often with the brake lever buried in the soft wall or pressed against the hard base underneath. The joint of the B8262 gives the blade a chance to fold forward rather than snap, which can mean the difference between finishing the session and walking back to the pits. Parents doing the spannering will still want to look at the lever after every fall, and a folded blade is simply swung back into position by hand before the YZ85 goes out again.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the B8262 for the Yamaha YZ85 in two groups that together span 2002 to 2022, one running up to 2014 and one starting in 2015, and in every case the lever goes onto the original front brake master cylinder. The folding C7266 clutch lever is listed only from 2015, so on a YZ85 built between 2002 and 2014 this brake lever is the only Accossato off-road lever on offer. The clutch lever comes in black or blue.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE for the B8262 on file; like the YZ85 itself, the lever is made for motocross and off-road use on closed ground.
Scope of Delivery
The YZ85 lever comes on its own: one B8262, blade colour as selected.
