The racing element is priced almost uniformly across Sprint Filter's catalogue, whichever housing it is cut for. The standard element is not: it follows the size and complexity of the case, so it is dear for a large multi-cylinder airbox and modest for a small one. Those two facts have an arithmetic consequence that catches people out. The step between the road specification and the racing one is narrowest on big machines and widest on small ones — and on this airbox, shared by the ZT 125-GK and five relatives, it comes to close to three times.

A flat price against a variable one

None of that is a comment on the material. It is a comment on where this machine sits in the range: the smaller and simpler the housing, the larger the step looks, because only one half of the comparison moves. Somebody weighing the same two products for a big touring twin would see a far narrower gap and might reasonably reach a different conclusion from the same reasoning. What changes from one page to the next is the ratio, not the article.

What the wider weave buys

One property: an opening of 85 µm and the flow rate that comes with it. The retention figure alongside it deserves reading precisely — 95.22 % against 93.13 % is a result for one particle size, 100 microns, and nothing is published below that for either medium, so it will not stretch into a general claim of finer filtration. Set against it, no slot-in element makes a standard motorcycle noticeably faster, and on a machine capped by its A1 type approval the supply side was never the limit. The benefit that survives on any element in this case is the modest one: a stable intake restriction, and a part that is cleaned instead of replaced.

Care and cleaning

Routine maintenance is a compressed-air job: hold the line to the clean side and work outward until the fabric is clear. Oily deposits come off in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, followed by a thorough rinse. Ambient moving air is the only permitted dryer, since heat deforms polyester permanently, and the SM276S F1-85 goes back into the housing dry with nothing applied to it.
