The Z650 is the inexpensive way into a twin-cylinder race class, and it collects modifications faster than anything else on this fitment list. Which is the reason to be precise about what a racing air filter does inside a modified motorcycle, because on its own it does very little. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 raises the rated flow of the element from the standard P08's 5,050 l/m²/sec to 15,000, and opens the weave from 80 to 85 microns to get there. Whether the engine ever calls for that flow is decided somewhere else entirely.
Key Features
- The racing medium: dry polyester woven at 85 microns, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Where the standard P08 sits at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec — a trade, not an upgrade
- Dry and never oiled, so nothing can be carried downstream onto the sensors
- The filtering area comes to roughly double that of other performance filters
- It replaces the standard element without modification to the airbox and without remapping
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused; the warranty runs two years from the date of purchase
The filter is one link, and the fuelling holds the other end
Fitting the element changes nothing that needs declaring: it goes into the standard airbox, needs no modification and no remap, and closed-loop fuelling absorbs the small change in airflow by itself. Closed-loop correction works within its own authority and around part throttle; at wide-open throttle the ECU follows a stored curve, and a stored curve is where a modified intake and exhaust either get their fuel or do not. So the order matters: exhaust, the mapping that belongs with it, then the filter as the part that keeps the airbox from becoming the new bottleneck. Bought first and alone, an F1-85 is headroom you have paid for and are not using, and on the road it is also a slightly coarser filter than the one you took out.
What a race-class Z650 is really buying
The honest description of the value here is not power, it is a service item that behaves the same all weekend. A paper element loads steadily and its restriction climbs as it does. A woven polyester element is blown clean in a couple of minutes and comes back to where it started. Across a season of track days and race weekends that adds up to a run of identical sessions and a single purchase instead of a shelf of boxes.
Care and cleaning
Two levels of service, both dry at the end. Compressed air through the PM163S F1-85 from the clean side outwards; then, after a dirty session, lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, followed by full drying in open air — never with heat, never over a flame. It is refitted dry, and never oiled. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki Z650, 2017 to 2026. The same element fits five machines built around this airbox, across the Z650, Z650RS, Ninja, Versys and Vulcan families; the complete list is in the Fitment tab. If your Z650 is a road bike, the standard P08 version is the better buy, and the P14 where the roads are dusty.
