Two numbers on this element look as though one of them has to be wrong. The racing medium filters at 85 µm, a wider opening than the 80 µm of the standard P08 — and Sprint Filter measures it holding 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles where the standard cloth holds 93.13. A wider mesh that keeps more. On an F 850 GS, a motorcycle people buy to keep and to use in weather, that contradiction is worth ten minutes before anything is spent.
Key Features
- Single-layer polyester, woven, used dry, with nothing oiled at any point in its life
- Filtration 85 µm, rated flow 15,000 l/m²/sec — Sprint Filter's racing specification
- 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles retained, against 93.13 for the road medium
- Close to twice the filtering surface of other performance elements, in the same frame
- A direct exchange for the paper panel, with no airbox work and no remap
- Washable, made for the life of the machine, with two years of guarantee
Why both figures can be true
Retention is a measurement rather than a property, and the measurement names its particle: 100 microns. Something that large does not slip through an opening of eighty-five microns or of eighty. It is caught by geometry in either cloth, and what separates the two results is everything else about the medium — how deep the weave stands, how much material lies in the path of the air, how the threads are laid against one another. A test at 100 microns therefore compares construction, not aperture. The number is real, and it is narrow.
What the number leaves out
The fraction that decides engine wear is far smaller than 100 microns and does not appear in that comparison at all. Particles in the tens of microns are where a 14 µm or a 7 µm cloth separates itself from an 85 µm one, and no single percentage tells you what is happening down there. So read the pair honestly. This element is measurably good at coarse debris and deliberately open to what is finer, which is exactly what a racing filter is meant to be: it belongs to engines run for hours at full load and stripped on a schedule, where induction capacity is the constraint and fine dust is managed by how often the machine is opened. A year-round F 850 GS serviced by the odometer is a different animal, and the road-and-track P08 is the proportionate part for it at a fraction of the outlay.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the work, applied to the clean side of the PM188S F1-85 so the dust travels outward instead of deeper. When a season has left more than air will move, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water leaves clear. Drying is the step that gets rushed: air only, for as long as it takes, with no heat and no flame, and never refitted while damp. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW F 850 GS built between 2017 and 2026, seated in the unmodified standard airbox. Nine machines take this racing element altogether, across BMW's middleweight F range and Kove; see the Fitment tab for every one of them.
