DescriptionThe whole story▼

Second-hand Hornets are still everywhere, and most of them are on their second or third career. A bike that began as somebody's first big motorcycle becomes a commuter, then a winter hack, then a project that gets tidied up over a couple of winters. The CB600F Hornet takes all of it without complaint, and the owner who tidies it usually starts with the parts that are cheap, visible and useful. The oil filler cap is all three, and Accossato's FP004 replaces it in aluminium with an M20x2.5 thread.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Honda CB600F Hornet, 2002 to 2015
  • Thread M20x2.5, as stated by Accossato
  • CNC-machined aluminium, colour applied by anodising
  • Eight colours: blue, green, black, orange, red, silver, titanium, gold
  • Also fits other motorcycles with the same filler size
  • A metal cap for a bike whose original has aged
  • No German ABE with us; a part for competition use

Construction and Material Quality

Machining in aluminium and colouring by anodising is what Accossato does with the FP004, and the result is a cap that has no coating to lose and no plastic to grow brittle. Eight colours are on the list, which on a bike being brought back into shape is an opportunity rather than a decoration: one shade repeated across a few small parts pulls a tidy-up together. The thread is M20x2.5. Accossato publishes that figure and no other, because it is what determines fit, and the maker notes that motorcycles beyond its list can use the cap where the filler size matches.

A Hornet in Its Second Career

Bikes with years behind them need a gentler hand than new ones. Open the filler only when the engine is cold and take it slowly, since an original cap that has seen a decade of heat is easier to break than to remove. Clean around the opening first, because road film builds up on an older engine and works its way into every corner. When the cap is off, look at the thread in the cover as well as the one on the cap; both have been through many seasons on a CB600F Hornet and a wipe with a clean cloth is often overdue. Read the level in the position the owner's manual specifies, and if you have bought the bike recently and do not know its history, an oil change now is a sensible way to start your own record. Add oil in small amounts, using the grade the handbook names, and check between each. Turn the FP004 in by hand until it seats. After the first ride, a look underneath confirms that the old cap's job has been taken over properly.

Fitment and Compatibility

For the CB600F Hornet, Accossato's list runs from 2002 to 2015. Fit is decided by the M20x2.5 thread, so other machines with that filler size can take the same cap; at Inter-Pace it is listed for the Monster 1200, the Hypermotard 939 and the Hyperstrada 821. On a motorcycle of this age it is particularly worth checking what is currently fitted, since covers and caps are often replaced over the years, and a thread comparison before ordering saves a return.

Road Approval

Documentation of a German ABE or any test mark for the FP004 is not available to us, so the cap is listed for racing and competition.

Scope of Delivery

The order comprises one FP004 oil filler cap in the anodised colour selected.
