The California 1400 works beautifully when it is moving and works hardest when it is not — a hot day in slow traffic is the condition in which this engine, and everything around it, is under the most thermal stress. That is worth thinking about before putting an oil-soaked filter in the airbox. The Sprint Filter P08 PM01S contains no oil at all.

Key Features

Dry polyester medium — no oil that heat can mobilise into the intake tract

Filtering surface roughly double that of other performance filters

Polyester threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a calibrated aperture

Direct replacement in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap

Washable and reusable; compressed air is the normal service

Like the engine it feeds

Heat is the variable nobody quotes

Filter specifications are written for a workshop bench, not for a large air-cooled twin sitting in summer traffic with no airflow over it. Under those conditions an oiled cotton element is at its most vulnerable: the film softens and travels, and the sensors downstream are exactly where it ends up. A dry polyester medium simply does not participate — there is nothing to soften, nothing to migrate, and no re-oiling step in which too much can be applied.

A big engine draws a lot of air

The pressure drop across a filter scales with the volume being pulled through it, and 1380 cc pulls a great deal even at modest revs. Twice the filtering surface means the element works at a smaller fraction of its capacity at any given throttle opening, which on an engine that makes its case through effortlessness is precisely the quality you would notice losing.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry.
