The G 310 R shares its intake housing with the GS version and with the TVS Apache RR310, but it does not share their air. A roadster in daily use breathes a city: brake and tyre particulate, diesel soot, the fine grey material that settles on everything parked outdoors — suspended matter that is finer and more constant than the coarse dust an adventure bike meets on a gravel road. Same box, same part number, different working environment.

Urban air is a different load

City riding is often assumed to be gentle on a filter because there is no visible dust. What there is instead is a steady, fine load, delivered in stop-start traffic where the engine is drawing air at low speed for long periods. It accumulates quietly, and on a paper element it is one of the reasons a service interval that looks generous on a motorway commute turns out not to be. A cleanable panel meets this differently: the load comes out with compressed air, and the same part goes back in.

What this element does and does not change

It does not add power. In an unmodified airbox the PM189S leaves a standard G 310 R exactly as strong as it was, and no filter in this range does anything else. What it offers is a lower intake restriction that stays lower across the interval, a dry construction with nothing that can migrate onto the intake sensors, and one consumable removed from the maintenance list for the life of the bike. On a machine bought for low running costs, that last point is the one that compounds.

Care and cleaning

Blow the PM189S out with compressed air from the clean side, working outwards; for an urban bike this is worth doing more often than the manual's filter interval suggests, because the load arrives steadily. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent handles what air leaves behind, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it in moving air at room temperature only — never a heat gun, a radiator or a flame.
