DescriptionThe whole story▼

The passenger footpegs have to come off. Akrapovic states it plainly, and it is the first thing to know about this pipe: routing the silencer high means the space where a pillion puts their feet is now occupied by exhaust.

Key Features

  • 4.1 PS more at 7,750 rpm — the larger power gain of the two nineT pipes
  • 3.1 Nm more at 7,450 rpm
  • 3.4 kg against the standard 8.0 kg: 4.6 kg and 57.5 per cent less
  • EC and ECE type approved, plus EPA
  • Titanium construction
  • For the high-mounted silencer position
  • The passenger footpegs must be removed

More Power Than the Low Version

The two nineT link pipes are not equivalent. This high-mounted one gives 4.1 PS against the low one's 2.8, because the routing is less constrained. It is also 900 grams heavier and costs more.

If the numbers are what matter to you, this is the one. If weight and price matter more, and you want to keep the pillion pegs, take L-B12SO8T.

A Solo Motorcycle Afterwards

Removing the passenger footpegs is not a small change. An R nineT with a high-mounted exhaust becomes a single-seat motorcycle in practice, and that is a decision to make before ordering rather than during the fitting.

Many nineT owners ride solo anyway, and the high-mounted look is much of the reason the platform exists. But it should be a choice, not a surprise.

Road Legal Despite Everything

Both EC and ECE approvals are in place. That is worth stating on a part this visually aggressive: the exhaust sits high beside the seat and looks like a race modification, and it is fully legal on European roads.

The Later Machines Take a Different Pipe

BMW revised the R nineT for 2021 to meet Euro 5, changing the exhaust in the process. This pipe covers 2014 to 2020 only. For a 2021, 2022 or 2023 machine the equivalent is L-B12SO11, and the figures for that part are considerably smaller — BMW's own Euro 5 mid-section is lighter to begin with.

Forty-Five Minutes

Five minutes longer than the low-mounted version, and the difference is the passenger footpegs and their brackets. Everything else is the same work.

Where the Extra Power Comes From

Routing the silencer high gives the gas a straighter path with fewer tight bends than the low route needs to clear the swingarm. That is the whole reason for the 1.3 PS difference between the two pipes — not a different material or a bigger bore.

Approved Despite the Look

EC and ECE certification means no entry in the documents and no individual inspection anywhere in Europe. Keep the certificate with the bike's papers — an exhaust routed this high invites questions at a roadside check, and the paperwork answers them.

Fitment and Compatibility

L-B12SO9T covers the BMW R nineT, Pure, Racer, Scrambler and Urban G/S from 2014 through 2020. Machines from 2021 take L-B12SO11 instead. Installation is quoted at 45 minutes.
