A range of one

Most housings in this catalogue are offered two, three or four media, and the choice between them is the substance of the purchase. A 1250 adventure twin is bought by riders who intend it to, and a good number of them will genuinely ride gravel, piste and dry unsealed roads where suspended mineral dust is present continuously rather than in bursts. What the fine mat costs

Seven microns filters through the thickness of the material rather than at a surface, which is what allows a mat this fine to hold a serious quantity of dust before it matters. The price is flow: 560 l/m²/sec is a small number next to a conventional performance element, and it is paid on the motorway approach as much as on the piste. Riders who spend almost all their year on tarmac are better served by the standard filter their machine came with. And nothing here is power — in an unmodified airbox the CM226T12 leaves a standard PAN America exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, is the routine service; a nonwoven releases its load slowly, so this is a job for patience rather than pressure. After genuinely dirty use, lukewarm water with a mild detergent takes what air will not, rinsed until the runoff is clear. Drying is done in moving air at room temperature and by nothing else — heat guns, radiators and flames destroy the mat invisibly. It is refitted dry, with nothing sprayed on it.
