Where a specification is hard to judge, buyers fall back on price, and the assumption underneath that habit is a ladder: pay more, get more protection. This airbox breaks the habit cleanly. Three media are catalogued for it, and the finest of them — the 14 micron nonwoven on this page — is listed a shade below the standard woven element, while the most open of the three, the racing weave, is listed at close to three times it. Sorted by price the three sit in one order; sorted by filtration they sit in another. On a ZT 125 that leaves the decision where it belongs, which is with the air.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven, 14 µm of filtration at 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow
- The finest medium catalogued for this housing, and not the most expensive one
- About twice the filtering area of a conventional performance element
- Fits the series airbox exactly where the paper panel sat, without modification or recalibration
- Runs dry: no oil is used in making it and none is applied in service
- Regenerated with compressed air, kept for the life of the bike, covered for two years from purchase
Three prices that rank nothing
What a medium costs follows how it is made and what it is made from, not how much it stops. The nonwoven is laid rather than woven, the racing cloth is a specialist article, and the standard weave is the volume product of the range. Those are manufacturing facts, and they land in a price list in an order unrelated to filtration. Read as a ladder, this page would tell a ZT 125 owner that the middle rung holds back the most, which is false. Read as three destinations it says what it means: 14 µm at 1,800, 80 µm at 5,050, and an open racing weave beyond both.
Choosing when the price list is silent
The question worth asking is what the machine actually breathes. Unsurfaced lanes, dry-season dust, gravel, long stretches behind other traffic, a summer of roadworks — that is what the finer mat was made for, and there the flow it costs is worth paying. Ordinary tarmac in ordinary weather is not, and the standard weave stays the sensible order. Neither choice touches performance: output on an A1 machine is settled by type approval, and no drop-in element makes a standard motorcycle noticeably quicker. What changes is how fine the barrier is, and how steady the restriction stays across the years.
Care and cleaning
Regeneration here is mechanical rather than chemical. Compressed air from the clean face outwards clears ordinary dust, and that is normally the whole service. Anything oily calls for lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent, followed by enough rinsing that the water leaves clean. Air-dry it at room temperature, take no shortcut with a heat gun or flame, and refit the SM276P14 dry with nothing sprayed on it. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Zontes ZT 125 built between 2020 and 2026. Six machines carry this code in total, from 125 up to 200 cm³, all of them sharing one airbox — which is why the element is ordered by code and build year rather than by model name.
