One of them is a circuit life: warm tarmac, high revs, sessions that finish when the fuel does. The other is a commute — the same faired 400 covering the same road twice a day, past building sites, farm entrances and whatever the road surface has been ground into by the traffic ahead. The Sprint Filter P14 CM220P14 is unambiguously the element for the second life. It is a dry non-woven medium that filters to 14 microns instead of the 80 microns of the standard P08, and it buys that retention with flow.

Key Features

There is no oil film in a dry non-woven medium, and therefore nothing that can reach the injectors, the throttle bodies or a sensor

Air flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, filtration down to 14 microns

Twice the filtering area, near enough, of other performance elements

Swaps straight into the standard airbox: no modification, no remap, homologation untouched

A compressor is the only tool the service asks for — the element is cleaned and used again

With two years of warranty

Which life the bike is leading

It is worth being straight about this rather than selling one part to everybody. If the CBR400R is used on track, the flow figure is the one that matters and the P08 at 5,050 l/m²/sec — or the P08 F1-85 racing medium at 15,000 — is the better trade, because a circuit is a comparatively clean place and the engine is asked for everything it has. If the bike commutes, that priority inverts. The engine spends its time well below the intake's ceiling, and the air it draws is the dirtiest air it will ever see. The CM220P14 is the answer to the second question, and it is not pretending to be the answer to the first.

Fairing on, element out

Access is the reason paper elements get postponed on a faired bike: the job is never the filter, it is the panels in front of it. A washable element does not change the panels, but it changes the arithmetic behind the decision. Once the airbox is open, there is nothing to order and nothing to wait for — the element is blown through and refitted the same afternoon, and the interval is set by how dirty the air has been rather than by when a part happens to arrive. Over the life of the bike the airbox gets opened more often, which is the point.

Care and cleaning

Between services it wants nothing more than a compressor: air from the clean side, directed outwards, and the CM220P14 back in dry. After a hard summer, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear, then leave it in open air until it is completely dry — heat and flames are the one thing that will ruin it. No oil, at any stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Honda CBR400R from 2019 to 2026.
