A Monster is rarely somebody's fourth motorcycle. It tends to be the only one, ridden for a few years and then sold to somebody who rides it for a few more, and the parts fitted along the way travel with it. That is worth a thought before choosing a filter, because this one is not a consumable. PM279S F1-85 is bought once and cleaned rather than replaced, so today's specification is still in the airbox long after the reasons for it have moved on.
Key Features
- One dry layer of woven polyester; no oil when it arrives and none ever afterwards
- Sprint Filter's racing cloth, woven to 85 µm and rated 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Held back 95.22 % of 100-micron particles, against 93.13 % for the P08 weave
- Close to double the working surface of comparable elements, in the original frame
- Drops into the unmodified airbox where the factory panel sat; the mapping is left alone
- Regenerated with an air line for the life of the machine; guaranteed two years from purchase
A cost paid once, over more than one owner
The arithmetic of a lifetime part is unusual: whoever fits it pays all of it, and the benefit is drawn down by everybody who rides the bike after. That favours the material: a washable element hands the next owner an intake in a known condition instead of a paper panel of unknown age, and it works against an over-specified medium just as steadily. Five microns of extra aperture are open in every hour this Monster will ever run, including the hours belonging to someone else, while the flow rating is drawn on only when the throttle is held wide for minutes. For commuting and roads the P08 at 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec is the match, with a P14 at 14 µm and 1,800 catalogued for the same box in dusty air.
What the paddock claim is and is not
By Sprint Filter's own account these are the most widely used air filters in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. That is a statement from the maker rather than an independent measurement, and it describes places this Monster will never visit. What it does suggest is that the material tolerates being worked and cleaned repeatedly, worth knowing about a part expected to last. It is not a power claim, and neither is anything else here: an element dropped into a standard airbox does not make a standard Monster V2 noticeably stronger, because the intake path was approved as one design with a filter in the middle.
Care and cleaning
Blow the element through from its clean side outwards, moving steadily across the surface rather than dwelling in one spot. Once a year, or after a winter of salt and damp, wash the PM279S F1-85 in warm water with a mild detergent until what runs off is clear. It then dries in still room air and nowhere else, never over a heater and never near a flame, and goes back completely dry. The cleaning sheet is filed under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Ducati Monster V2 built in 2026, a direct replacement in the series airbox. This part number covers five machines on Ducati's 890 cc V2 engine, each with its model years in the Fitment tab.
