The RC 390 is the bike that fills novice race grids and track-day novice groups across Europe, and that use pattern is hard on air filters in a way road riding is not: short, hot, full-throttle sessions, then a bike that sits in a van. The Sprint Filter P08 PM200S is built for exactly that rhythm — a dry polyester element you clean with compressed air between sessions and refit immediately, with no washing, drying or oiling in between.

Built by a company that lives in the paddock

Sprint Filter has been making performance air filters since 1952 and supplies the racing classes where filters are changed between sessions rather than between services. The polyester medium came out of that world: permeable, dimensionally stable, unaffected by the folding used to build the element, and cleanable in the time it takes to refuel. Cotton gauze and sponge depend on stacked layers, which flow poorly in some places and filter poorly in others depending on how the layers happen to sit.

Where the F1-85 takes over

If your RC 390 is a dedicated race bike and you want the most open element Sprint Filter builds for this airbox, that is the P08 F1-85 — a patented medium woven from threads starting at ø 22 microns, and by Sprint Filter's own account the most widely used filter in MotoGP, Moto3, Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. It flows more and filters less finely, which is the right bargain on a circuit and the wrong one on the road. The P08 here is the choice for a bike that does both.

Care and cleaning

Between sessions: air jet through the element against the normal intake direction, refit, done. For a heavily loaded element use compressed air first, then ordinary household detergent, agitate gently, rinse until the water runs clear and air dry completely.
