The Tiger 1200 GT answers almost every question a rider can ask it from the saddle: the pressure in both tyres, which mode is live, how far the fuel will go. The intake is the exception. The engine measures the air it draws and trims quietly around whatever the filter is doing, so an element slowly loading with road dust produces no warning and nothing the throttle hand can read. On the most instrumented Tiger yet built, the one part you are asked to judge by feel is the one you never see. The Sprint Filter SM256S settles that differently: a dry woven polyester element that is cleaned and put back, instead of a paper panel whose condition you are invited to guess at.
Key Features
- A single woven layer of polyester, threads from ø 22 microns, aperture calibrated to 80 µm
- Flow rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec — Sprint Filter's standard medium for road and track use
- Dry from new and never oiled, so no film can migrate onto the air sensor or the throttle bodies
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters, inside the standard airbox
- A direct replacement for the paper panel: no airbox modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable for the life of the motorcycle, two years of warranty from purchase
Why the dash stays quiet
The silence is not a fault. Fuelling is corrected against measured airflow, and it is corrected well, which is precisely why a rising intake restriction reaches the rider as nothing at all. The condition of a paper panel is therefore settled by the service schedule or not at all. To be plain about the rest: a drop-in element does not make a standard Tiger 1200 noticeably more powerful. What it does change is the resistance the filter itself adds, which starts low and is returned to low at every clean rather than only ever climbing.
Low resistance from area, not from an open weave
There are two ways to let more air through a filter: open the holes, or provide more of them. Sprint Filter takes the second route, folding roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters into the standard housing, so the 80 µm aperture is kept while the flow figure stands at 5,050 l/m²/sec. In the manufacturer's comparison the dry P08 held 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton. Retention is a proportion rather than a gate, and dry does not mean loose.
Care and cleaning
Normal service for the SM256S is a line of compressed air, blown from the clean side outwards through the media. After a salted winter, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. It dries completely in open air, never with heat and never with a flame, and goes back into the airbox dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Tiger 1200 GT, GT Pro and GT Explorer built from 2023 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same element serves the Tiger 1200 Rally of those years — two machines on one part number. Check your model year in the Fitment tab.
