Service schedules run on two clocks and most riders only ever notice one. Beside the mileage there is a time interval, and on a motorcycle covering a couple of thousand kilometres a year the time interval always arrives first. That is what a well-kept Speed Triple 1050 R usually is by now: kept, enjoyed on the good days, and rarely ridden far enough to wear anything out. Its air filter is therefore renewed by the calendar, in near-new condition, over and over again.
Key Features
- A single dry layer of woven polyester, aperture at 80 µm, thread diameters from 22 microns
- Rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the everyday Sprint Filter specification for road and track
- Dry from the first kilometre to the last, so nothing migrates towards the intake sensor
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance elements inside the same airbox
- Fits the series housing exactly as Triumph built it, with no remap required
- Serviced and reused rather than bought again, made to last the bike, two-year warranty
An element that ages by air, not by date
Loading is a function of the air volume drawn through the element, and air volume follows engine revolutions rather than the number on the calendar. A bike doing a few thousand kilometres a season simply does not put much through it. A cellulose panel still gets replaced, because there is no way to look at one and refit it with any confidence about what it will do next. A washed PM123S turns that line in the schedule into a five-minute check with an actual outcome: it comes out, it gets an air line, it goes back in, and the date is met without a purchase.
What it does not do
It does not make the R faster. Nothing about a panel filter makes a standard 1050 triple noticeably stronger, and a low-mileage machine is the last place such a claim would ever show itself. The benefit is narrower and much easier to verify: an intake resistance that starts low and is reset at every cleaning rather than climbing between services, and one recurring purchase struck off a list that would otherwise repeat for as many years as the bike is kept. Finer media exist for dirtier air, but they buy their extra retention with flow, and on a fair-weather roadster there is nothing to buy.
Care and cleaning
Little use does not mean no attention: look at the element when the calendar service falls due, rather than when the mileage suggests it. Compressed air from the clean side outwards is normally all it needs. If a wet season has left more than dust, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until clear, and dry it in open air — never with heat, never near a flame — before refitting. It is not oiled. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 R built from 2012 to 2015. The same element covers one further listing, the standard Speed Triple 1050 from 2011. The later Speed Triples run on different elements, so confirm your model year in the Fitment tab before ordering.
