The Pure was the plain one: an R nineT with the expensive details taken back out, cast wheels in place of spokes, the lowest step into the family. A good many were somebody's first large motorcycle, and on a first large motorcycle the air filter tends to be the first job an owner does without booking it in. Nothing is drained, nothing bled, no setting disturbed — a cover comes off, a panel comes out, and you are looking straight at the thing the manual keeps telling you to replace. The PM109S is the version of that panel which does not have to be replaced.
Key Features
- A single dry layer of woven polyester, oil-free on arrival and oil-free for the rest of its life
- Filtration at 80 µm with 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow — the P08 is made for road and track
- Polyester fibres from ø 22 microns across, which is the thread and not the opening it forms
- Something near double the filtering cloth of other performance filters, in the standard frame
- Exchanges directly for the paper element; the airbox stays as it is, and the mapping with it
- Cleaned instead of replaced for the life of the bike, with two years of guarantee from purchase
The first job you do yourself
What that first look teaches is that a filter does not fail. It fills, gradually, announcing nothing, while the engine management quietly compensates for it. With paper, looking is only useful if a spare is already on the shelf, which is why most riders skip it and follow the interval instead. With a woven panel there is something to be done about whatever you find, on the same afternoon, with an air line. It is a small change in the nature of the task: it stops being an appointment and becomes a check.
Standard, and staying that way
A Pure is more likely than its stablemates to be exactly as it left the factory, and this element is designed on that assumption. It drops into the untouched housing, wants no work on the airbox and no remap, and takes nothing away from the state the motorcycle was homologated in. It adds nothing either: a filter panel is not a power part, and a standard Pure will feel precisely as before, because box, ducting and fuelling were matched to one another with an element already in place. Should a different exhaust or a map follow later, this part does not need revisiting — an air filter is specified by the housing it seals into, not by what the engine does behind it.
Care and cleaning
Take the element out, hold an air line to its clean face and work outward until the weave runs clear; that is the ordinary service. After a winter of salt and road film, wash it in tepid water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water is clean. Let it dry in open air alone, with no heat gun, no radiator and no flame near it, then put it back dry and untreated. The cleaning sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R nineT Pure of 2017 to 2020, as a straight replacement in the standard airbox. Fifteen machines in the air-cooled boxer range carry this part number; all are listed with their model years in the Fitment tab.
