DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 60015-89 is a shock absorber spring rated at 210 N/mm, 85 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Free length 85 mm
- 33 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 210 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 60015-89
How Öhlins Makes Them
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 85 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 210 N/mm
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
What Fitting Involves
Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
