DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 20580-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 20580-36
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 250 mm
  • 118 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 250 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 105 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
