An F 900 R puts nothing between the rider and the intake, so on a hard opening of the throttle the induction note is part of what the motorcycle sounds like — a genuine component of the experience, and the reason a great many intake parts get bought. It is also the most misleading feedback a bike gives, because a freer element changes what you hear long before it changes anything anyone could measure.

Key Features

Dry polyester in the racing weave, oil-free at every stage of its life

An opening of 85 µm at a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec, against 80 µm and 5,050 for the road P08

About double the filtering surface of other performance elements

Fits the standard airbox exactly where the paper panel sat, with no remap

Blown clean and refitted rather than replaced at every service

Two years of warranty from the day of purchase

Sound is not evidence

Induction noise is the sound of air moving quickly through openings, and anything that lets it move a little more freely lets a little more of that noise out of the box. The ear reads the change as urgency. A dyno usually reads nothing at all, because the restriction removed was small beside the throttle bodies, the cam timing and the exhaust that follow it. None of this is an argument against the part. It is an argument against buying it for the wrong reason, and against trusting a road test carried out with your own ears. If the sound is what is wanted, that can be said plainly; it does not need a horsepower claim attached to it.

The claim that does survive

A road bike's element leads an easy life beside anything ridden off the tarmac: street dust, rain, and the slow even loading that lets a paper filter go unnoticed for years. Against that background the case for a woven panel is not power but permanence. It begins at a low resistance, holds it far into the interval because there is roughly twice as much cloth to load, and comes back with compressed air instead of being bought again. Between the two woven versions of this fitment, the F1-85 is the racing one, priced at around two and a half times the road medium and built for engines that run out of intake before they run out of anything else. An F 900 R on the public road is not one of them.

Care and cleaning

Air from the clean side outward is the whole routine for the PM188S F1-85, and for most services it is all that is needed. When it stops being enough, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed through until clear. Drying happens in air and nowhere warm: no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, and the panel is refitted only once no dampness is left in the weave.
