DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01092-89 is a shock absorber spring rated at 210 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 210 N/mm
- 65 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 01092-89
- Free length 170 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 210 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Fitting
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
