An argument about flow headroom is usually embarrassing on a road bike, because the engine in front of the filter never comes close to asking for what the element could supply. This is one of the few places in KTM's listings where it can be made without flinching: the 1390 Super Duke R carries the largest and most powerful engine the factory builds, and if any road-registered KTM has an intake appetite worth putting a 15,000 l/m²/sec weave in front of, it is this one. Which is a long way from saying that it needs one.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester at 85 microns, quoted at 15,000 l/m²/sec of flow
- The highest rate of the four materials offered for this airbox, by a wide margin
- Retention measured at 95.22 % of 100-micron particles in the maker's comparison
- No oil at any stage, so the intake sensing is never part of the discussion
- Direct fit in the standard 1390 airbox, without modification or a remap
- Cleaned and reused across the life of the bike; two-year warranty
Where the ceiling actually sits
A filter never delivers more air than the rest of the tract is prepared to draw. Ahead of it are an aperture and a duct; behind it are throttle bodies, cam timing, a catalyst and a map, and each of those sets a limit of its own. Raising the element's rate moves one term in that chain, and it only shows up at all if that term was the binding one, which on a homologated road machine it rarely is. Hence the standing caveat, which applies to every element in this range: no drop-in filter makes a standard motorcycle noticeably faster, and the only benefit worth paying for is a restriction that starts low and returns there after every wash.
Which direction the range should be read in
For most 1390 owners the interesting question is not this weave against the standard one but which way along the four their own air argues. A rider who meets grit and mineral dust should be looking down the list, not up it. A rider whose air is clean and whose use is hard and sustained has a reason to look up — and can note that a coarser weave also loads more slowly, which is a quieter benefit than the flow figure but a more frequently collected one.
Care and cleaning
The PM190S F1-85 is dry and stays dry. Compressed air applied at the clean face and worked outward returns the load through the surface that caught it, and that is the ordinary service. If the weave has taken on a film that air will not lift, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water comes off clear, then leave it in moving air until it is genuinely dry. No heat of any kind at any point, and nothing sprayed on before refitting. The cleaning sheet is in the Downloads tab.
