The word Racing in this product name is a material specification. It comes out of the price list, where Sprint Filter uses it to separate this weave from the road one, and it would appear in the title of this element whichever machine it happened to be listed against. That the RR is the most track-oriented motorcycle on the list is two labels agreeing by accident, and an accident is not an argument. Whatever case exists for putting this weave in an RR has to be built out of what the cloth does, not out of what the two names have in common.

Where the label comes from

The use case is derived from the material code, so P08 becomes road and track, the 14-micron nonwoven becomes dusty conditions, and this weave becomes racing — regardless of what is downstream of it. The price ordering is more informative than the name: in this family the racing weave is listed at more than twice the standard element and at over three times either of the fine materials, while the housing, fitting and installation are identical across all four. What the ratio pays for is cloth.

What the cloth actually offers

A far higher rate per square metre, and a coarser mesh to achieve it. The higher rate is only drawn on when everything downstream is asking for it, which on a road-registered machine is a narrow and brief set of moments; the coarser mesh is a property of the material and cannot be washed back in. And whichever of the four is fitted, the outcome is the same in one respect: a drop-in element does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger. The dependable return is a low starting restriction that is restored at each cleaning.

Care and cleaning

Servicing a PM190S F1-85 is a dry job. Apply compressed air to the clean side and work outward so the collected material leaves by the face that arrested it — that is a complete interval in most seasons. For a heavier or greasier load, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear, then drying in circulating air for as long as it takes.
