A 790 Duke usually keeps two calendars. One counts the miles ridden between spring and autumn. The other counts the weeks the bike stands in an unheated garage with a trickle charger on the battery, and only the first of those ever reaches a service schedule. The airbox lives through both. Standing air carries moisture, and moisture is the one thing a cellulose panel can never be relieved of again. PM283S puts dry woven polyester into the standard housing instead, a material meant to be washed, dried and refitted.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, never oiled at any stage
- Threads from ø 22 microns — the thread, not the gap between threads
- 80 microns of filtration, 5,050 litres per square metre per second of flow
- Around twice the filtering area of other performance filters
- Fits the standard housing, no modification and no remapping
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
Four months of standing still
Cellulose takes up water from the air around it and swells as it does, and it does not hand that back on the next ride: the fibres stay deformed, and the panel that comes out in spring is not the panel that went in. Nobody notices it happen, because a filter never announces itself — the engine management simply trims the mixture around whatever restriction it finds. A dry weave has no equivalent failure: it gets damp, it dries out, and after a wet winter it can be washed deliberately and returned to a known state. On a machine that spends a third of the year not moving, that is the difference between an intake that ages with the seasons and one that does not.
What changes and what does not
It does not make a standard 790 Duke noticeably quicker. No drop-in element can: throttle bodies, cam profiles, catalyst and calibration each set their own ceiling, and none of them moves because the panel under the tank is made of something else. What does change is the restriction curve between services. A paper panel is at its best on the day it goes in and climbs from there until somebody buys the next one. A washable weave is brought back close to its starting figure with compressed air, as often as the year makes necessary — a lower and, more usefully, a steadier restriction.
Care and cleaning
Direct compressed air through the element from the clean side outwards. When air alone stops shifting what is held in the weave, warm water with a mild washing-up liquid will, and the element is rinsed until the water runs away clear. Let it dry in moving air only — never a heat gun, never a flame — and refit it dry. There is no oiling stage anywhere, so nothing can travel downstream onto a sensor. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet for PM283S sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM 790 Duke built between 2022 and 2026. Three machines share this element: the 790 Duke and the two Husqvarna 801 models on the same airbox, and the Fitment tab lists them in full. A 790 Duke from the earlier 2018–2020 run takes a different Sprint Filter code, so check the build year rather than the model name.
