The T in this listing is the touring version, and it is the one that describes how these machines are actually used. A 1290 Super Adventure with a full set of luggage, a pillion and a fortnight's worth of everything is a motorcycle operating a long way from the condition it was tested in — heavier, less aerodynamic, and asked to hold a motorway cruise for hours rather than minutes.

Sustained load is a different question from peak load

Peak power is a brief event; a loaded tourer at cruising speed is a sustained one. The engine is drawing air continuously for hours at a time, and everything in the intake tract is being asked to perform not once but for the whole afternoon. A paper element under those conditions is doing what it was designed to do — capturing particles and progressively closing itself in the process — and on a long trip it can move through a meaningful part of its service life in a single week. The P08 PM155S has roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements, which is a way of saying it takes considerably longer to reach the same restriction.

Nothing to carry, nothing to source on the road

The practical consequence is what you do about it when the week has been dusty. With a paper element the answer is a spare in the pannier, or an evening spent finding a dealer in a town you had not planned to stop in. With the P08 the answer is compressed air at a filling station and ten minutes with the seat off. Water and a mild detergent will handle worse, provided it goes back in dry — never with heat, and never near a flame.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame.
