DescriptionThe whole story▼

This is the Öhlins HD 816, released for the Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider FXDL as built between 2011 and 2016. A factory shock is set for an average rider on an average road, and few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Model-specific fitment for the Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider FXDL (2011–2016) — no modification required
  • Spring rate 32 N/mm, set against this machine's weight
  • Adjustable overall length for ride-height and geometry changes
  • Monotube damper layout
  • Ships with spring 21180-01
  • Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet
  • 36 mm damping piston
  • Damper stroke 67 mm

How Öhlins Builds It

The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Spring and damper are separate part numbers, so a rate change does not mean a new unit.

How It Behaves on the Road

325 +5/-5 mm of adjustment turns ride height into a setting rather than a fixed dimension. Spring rate is 32 N/mm as delivered, which sets static sag for a rider of typical weight. Öhlins quotes 67 mm of damper stroke for this fitment. Öhlins specifies 36 mm for the piston on this number. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to. Preload is set separately again, and preload is what determines static sag rather than damping.

The STX 36 Twin in Detail

Preload is set by a threaded collar on each side, and both sides must be set equally. The 36 mm piston suits the shorter stroke and steeper mounting angle typical of a twin-shock frame. Twin-shock installations load each damper differently from a monoshock, and Öhlins specifies the pair accordingly.

What This Means on the Dyna Low Rider FXDL

Cruisers carry weight low and long, with short suspension travel doing work that a sportbike would spread over twice the stroke. Öhlins covers the 6-year production run of this generation with a single part number, which means the mounting and the linkage stayed unchanged across it.

Fitment and Compatibility

Öhlins releases HD 816 against the Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider FXDL (2011–2016). Nothing about it is generic — the mounting dimensions alone rule out a different model.

Road Approval

Road approval: unclear. There is no published German approval for this part on the Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider FXDL, and we would rather tell you that than imply one exists.
