DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21042-26 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 84 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21042-26
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 85 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
