DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 66388-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 72 N/mm, 115 mm long with a 55 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- 72 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 72 N/mm
- Tapered-wound, constant rate
- Free length 115 mm
- Powder-coated black
- Öhlins part number 66388-03
- Inner diameter 55 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
The Numbers That Matter
The 55 mm bore and 115 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 72 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Fitting
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
