DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06320-18 is a shock absorber spring rated at 68 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 61 mm
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 220 mm
- Öhlins part number 06320-18
- Measured spring rate 68 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
How Öhlins Makes Them
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.
Size and Rate
The 61 mm bore and 220 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 68 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 68 N/mm
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Installation
The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
