DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05174-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 17.5 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 370 mm
  • Öhlins part number 05174-02
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 17.5 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Free length 370 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 17.5 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

What Fitting Involves

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
